Keeping it Wild Blog 2 - Daniel

Keeping it Wild Blog 2 - Daniel

Welcome back to another edition of the Keeping it Wild blog series. We are well into both the summer and the project and each member of the team has been given the task of building an object related to nature in the virtual Autus space. In this series of blogs we are going to interview each member about their project and their hopes for the future of both themselves and the KIW project. In this edition of the blog, we meet Daniel, who is building a hedgehog house.

Daniel's Hedehog House projectSolly: Hello Daniel

Daniel: Hi Solly

Solly: Can I ask first what inspired you to build this hedgehog house?

Daniel: Well I would say that my main inspiration for this was reading some articles online about bird boxes, and one on creating so-called 'hedgehog cafes' on the website of the RSPB.
So I looked at that and decided to make a hedgehog house. Also thought about a bird box, but this one seemed a bit more interesting for me, and I have seen hedgehogs in my local area.
And then decided to create a model hedgehog house, with food, a water bowl and some hedgehog prims.

Solly: How long have you been using this program for?

Daniel: I have been using this now for about 2 years, as I have been involved with several projects with Autus that use it.
I've used this programme for nearly 2 years, and have some experience using it to create models, prims and presentations.
And I am hoping to use that to make a nice hedgehog house, and make it fun and interesting.

Solly: Have you ever built a hedgehog house in real life?

Daniel: Well I think I have tried to do a bird box before.
But no, I've not done anything like that, DIY isn't something I do often.
So no I've never done that before, so this will be something new. Also, I do go into my garden but rarely do gardening in there.

Solly: What is something that you want to get out of KIW?

Daniel: I am hoping to learn some stuff about hedgehogs, create a hedgehog house, and inspire people to conserve their habitats.
Also it will give me a chance to take photos of wildlife in the park, which I do sometimes.
It would give me an idea of what can be done to conserve and preserve wildlife in London, as I do think the environment is an important issue.
I am mostly planning to use assets and prims available in the AIM Grid, along with some hedgehog photos available online.
I will try to use ones within the public domain or that are freely available, to avoid copyright issues
Also, might add elements like food, notecards with info about hedgehogs in the UK, a water bowl and things like bushes and trees.
Add some bushes/trees for decoration too.
And might add an NPC carer, but not sure that will be possible to do in 3 weeks.

Solly: How do you plan to wrap up this project?

Daniel: I hope it will wrap up with the hedgehog house finished, and full of hedgehogs and food.
Also with links to projects that are looking to conserve hedgehog habitats, and therefore inspire other people to protect them from hazards like cars etc.
I am also hoping to raise awareness of projects by the RSPB and other groups.
And therefore, help to conserve hedgehog habitats in the UK.
They do projects like hedgehog cafes, so I am hoping this will raise awareness and show people how to conserve their habitats.
